1880 Zinfandel

After Bill Greenough acquired Rancho Saucelito in 1974, he was faced with the arduous task of reviving three acres of abandoned Zinfandel vines planted in 1880. The roots of the century-old vineyard were still going strong without care or irrigation, but the vines were wild and choked with overgrowth. Clearing the land and retraining the vines was no easy task. Slowly but surely, however, Bill restored the old vineyard to its original head-pruned glory.

After Bill began making wine from the original vineyard as well as newer blocks he had planted, he noticed that the old-vine lots were different, with their own unique intensity of flavor and character. Over the years, friends encouraged Bill to bottle a wine made solely from these dry-farmed old vines. With the intent of keeping things simple, he never did—until the vintage of 2006. This vintage marked the 25th anniversary of Bill and Nancy’s commercial winemaking at Saucelito Canyon.

Made in limited quantities exclusively from the old vines at Saucelito Canyon, the 1880 Zinfandel is the crown jewel of our winery. This wine showcases the mature flavors, natural layered complexity and remarkable character that are inherent to these historic vines.

The Zinfandel Reserve is a limited-production selection from the estate vineyard, chosen from barrels that exhibit a level of intensity and quality that befit a showcase bottling from each vintage. The House Block of the estate vineyard, which is half planted to the original Saucelito Canyon old-vine clone, typically serves as the backbone of the Zinfandel Reserve. This wine is a great match for seared flank steak with herbed butter, barbecue chipotle chicken and chocolate-ginger spice cake.

The 2008 vintage opens with signature aromas from our historic Zinfandel vines. This classic SaucelitoCanyon nose features bright cherry, dried fig & a signature cola-berry aroma, developing further with deep brown baking spices & a hint of vanilla extract. A velvety smooth mouth feel surrounds flavors of raspberry and strawberry jam. Enjoyable yet youthful tannins support a full, rich lingering finish.

Our Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a small wedge of our estate vineyard that we affectionately call the Bordeaux Triangle, where we first planted Cabernet Sauvignon in 1976. Here, grape yields are limited by well-drained sandy soil, resulting in deep flavors with excellent balance. Savor it with rosemary rack of lamb and classic roast beef with herbed potatoes.

Once again the fruit for this rich, mellow wine comes from one of the few Tempranillo vines on the Central Coast, on a warm south-facing slope at Laetitia Vineyard in Arroyo Grande Valley. Our 2008 Tempranillo is full of deep aromas like baked earth and dried sage with a hint smoke. Flavors of black tartan cherry, roasted beets, and thyme meld with moderate gravelly tannins. A wine to be savored with big flavors and bold moments. These earth inspired flavors will pair well with sausage paella or bold cheeses with citrus marinated olives. 2008 Sauvage Estate

Sauvage is a proprietary blend that celebrates the untamed terrain and natural flavors of our sustainably farmed estate vineyard in the upper Arroyo Grande Valley. Here, for more than 30 years, we have grown a selection of classic Bordelais varietals in a narrow sandy block that yields sparse, richly flavored clusters. This block is popular with the native wildlife, and deer, foxes, coyotes and even bears are routinely seen roaming around the vines. The grapes from this corner of the vineyard combine to create a smooth, supple blend with depth and complexity. While this wine will reward cellaring, those who like to walk on the wild side are encouraged to enjoy it in its youth.
