Wines
Reds and Blends
We complement our Zinfandels with other red blends and varietals that excel in our estate vineyard and around San Luis Obispo County. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have a long history at Saucelito Canyon, while relative newcomers to our lineup include Tempranillo and Petite Sirah.
2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate
Our Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a small wedge of our estate vineyard that we affectionately call the Bordeaux Triangle, where we first planted Cabernet Sauvignon in 1976. Here, grape yields are limited by well-drained sandy soil, resulting in deep flavors with excellent balance. Savor it with rosemary rack of lamb and classic roast beef with herbed potatoes.

2007 Merlot Estate
Like our Cabernet Sauvignon, our Merlot comes from the small Bordeaux Triangle block of our estate vineyard. Yields are so low in this block that only select vintages grace us with enough grapes to make a varietal bottling of Merlot. This wine is soft and supple, with beautiful aromas and dark fruit flavors. Pair it with portabella mushroom lasagna, lamb stew with lentils and warm frosted chocolate cupcakes.

2008 Tempranillo - Arroyo Grande Valley
Once again the fruit for this rich, mellow wine comes from one of the few Tempranillo vines on the Central Coast, on a warm south-facing slope at Laetitia Vineyard in Arroyo Grande Valley. Our 2008 Tempranillo is full of deep aromas like baked earth and dried sage with a hint smoke. Flavors of black tartan cherry, roasted beets, and thyme meld with moderate gravelly tannins. A wine to be savored with big flavors and bold moments. These earth inspired flavors will pair well with sausage paella or bold cheeses with citrus marinated olives. For a dinner party idea, create a Spanish menu with Rioja-stlye potato and chorizo stew and the 2008 Tempranillo.

2008 Petite Sirah - San Luis Obispo County
The nose of this hearty Petite Sirah, a blend of cool and warm climate fruit, presents bold ripe cherry aromas accented by a subtle hint of smoke and earth. The palate presents spice laden fruit characteristics which lead into a midpalate rich with flavors of herb and shale. Slight tobacco hints accent the youthful tannins in this wine. For easy entertaining, pair our Petite Sirah with roasted eggplant and goat cheese pizza. Our tasting room staff recommends pairing with barbequed pulled-pork sandwiches on crusty sourdough bread.

2007 Hi Mountain Red Blend - Paso Robles
Our Hi Mountain red wine cuvée pays tribute to the tallest peak in the Santa Lucia wilderness, which is home to Margarita Vineyard. Here, we harvest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to create this uniquely artful blend. A portion of the proceeds from this wine are donated to the Hi Mountain Condor Lookout to support the endangered California condor.

2008 Sauvage Estate
Sauvage is a proprietary blend that celebrates the untamed terrain and natural flavors of our sustainably farmed estate vineyard in the upper Arroyo Grande Valley. Here, for more than 30 years, we have grown a selection of classic Bordelais varietals in a narrow sandy block that yields sparse, richly flavored clusters. This block is popular with the native wildlife, and deer, foxes, coyotes and even bears are routinely seen roaming around the vines. The grapes from this corner of the vineyard combine to create a smooth, supple blend with depth and complexity. While this wine will reward cellaring, those who like to walk on the wild side are encouraged to enjoy it in its youth.
Cabernet Sauvignon 26% • Cabernet Franc 33% • Merlot 36% • Malbec 5%
