Saucelito Canyon

Wines

Reds and Blends

We complement our Zinfandels with other red blends and varietals that excel in our estate vineyard and around San Luis Obispo County. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have a long history at Saucelito Canyon, while relative newcomers to our lineup include Tempranillo and Petite Sirah.

2009 Tempranillo - Arroyo Grande Valley

Our Tempranillo grapes come from Laetitia Vineyard, which is located on the very western edge of the Arroyo Grande Valley. Here, on a south-facing slope in Los Berros Canyon just a few miles from the Pacific shoreline, the vines yield fruit with hearty flavors and exquisite natural structure. Enjoy this wine with Tandoori chicken with garlic naan and grilled marinated flank steak.

2009 Dos Mas Zinfandel Blend

Zinfandel and two more. Or “dos más,” as they say in Spanish. Such was Winemaker Tom Greenough’s inspiration for this eclectic blend, which honors our winery’s historic focus on Zinfandel while embracing Grenache and Petite Sirah as contemporary soulmates. The result is a deliciously modern twist on the post rancho-era field blends of early California, sourced from standout vineyards in our backyard of San Luis Obispo County. The Zinfandel anchors the wine with a jammy, fruit-forward character. The Grenache adds a layer of bright red fruit, while the Petite Sirah adds peppery structure. Enjoy a glass. Or dos.

2008 Petite Sirah - San Luis Obispo County

Our Petite Sirah comes from both cool and warm climate vineyards in San Luis Obispo County, resulting in a complex and balanced wine with up-front fruit as well as a dark spice backbone. This wine displays the varietal’s naturally rich flavors with delicate nuances of orange blossom, wet shale and fig. Recommended pairings include warm duck salad and beer can chicken with potato salad.

2009 Sauvage Estate

Sauvage is a proprietary blend that celebrates the untamed terrain and natural flavors of our sustainably farmed estate vineyard in the upper Arroyo Grande Valley. Here, for more than 30 years, we have grown a selection of classic Bordelais varietals in a narrow sandy block that yields sparse, richly flavored clusters. This block is popular with the native wildlife, and deer, foxes, coyotes and even bears are routinely seen roaming around the vines. The grapes from this corner of the vineyard combine to create a smooth, supple blend with depth and complexity. While this wine will reward cellaring, those who like to walk on the wild side are encouraged to enjoy it in its youth.
